it had been almost a full hour since the storm had passed over Lumen, announcing the arrival of an unexpectedly sane Edmar Milfort on palace grounds.

“Your Highness . . .” he began. “I am here to convince you, firsthand, of the existence of Anibalians,” Edmar announced.

The King whimpered.

“Captain Milfort, as glad as I am to see you well . . .” the king began. “We have closed investigation on this matter fifteen years ago.”

“They have set up a massive citadel with thousands of inhabitants south of the savannah, well below Sanguepotamia,” he confided. “It amazes me how no one connected the dots before. We tried to warn Paradisian authorities, but we were not heard,” Edmar continued. “We followed the coordinates Emissary Stella Steppebison sent until Sanguepotamia. Then we headed southwest on the exact bearings she gave. On our third night after crossing the Qosmic frontier out of Devagar, an intense desert fog settled over us, and some of our group got separated. We stayed put, unable to see for two days and two nights. As soon as the fog lifted, we found one of our missing emissaries: Hyatt Flores. His body appeared to be entering the first stages of . . . decomposition . . . lying exactly where he slept. Not long after, we saw the indigo haze that had once brought down Madame B’Olïve . . . and most of my emissaries contracted some sort of fever that caused their abilities to go haywire. “It was Yuri Bo Billy who suspected Stella was up to no good. He went after her. That was the last time I ever spoke to him. Stella showed up hours after he left with a baby in her arms, in complete panic. With my Keana in her arms . . .” His voice quavered.

“What do you mean Stella was up to no good?” the monarch asked him.

“She was never in harm’s way. Stella had ulterior motives for being in the mission, and she was being protected by someone. I believe her objective was to break Anibalians into Devagar at someone’s behest.”

“She’s been locked up singing songs and eating mushed fruit for fifteen years, so it seems like she failed,” King Howard retorted.

“I have reason to fear for my daughter . . . her daughter,” Edmar was quick to add, censoring himself, to appease the anxious look on his aunt’s spectral face. “I saw The Storm passing over the city. That won’t stop them. It’s not shamans you should be afraid of. The Anibalians will find their way in. Simply wearing Alevir’s Feet could give them airborne access into Paradis. Vellaskey is putting on his best game face but . . . that indigo haze? I’ve seen it before! That means Devinity levels in the air are dropping off the charts. It’s only a
